This is one of my favourite books – I had to study it in English and loved it – I even got my copy signed by Richard Adams! I haven’t seen the film but, in the book, Rowf and Snitter do NOT die. The journalist, Digby Driver takes the dogs’ side in order to humiliate the government and the A.R.S.E Laboratory and gets Snitter’s master out of hospital. They race to the beach and are almost too late but a boat sailed by Sir Peter Scott (son of Scott of the Antarctic) saves the dogs from the water and takes them back to shore, where he, Driver, the beach warden and Snitter’s master refuse to let the dogs be shot. Sir Peter Scott takes a shine to Rowf and Rowf is tempted to go with him but, in the end chooses to stay with his friend Snitter. Rowf and Snitter go home to live with Snitter’s master, and Digby Driver offers to stay with them until Snitter’s master is fully better (he plans to write a book about the dogs). A really tear-jerking end; it’s a pity the film didn’t stick to the original.
